I had a kids magic trick ’set’ when I was little and their version of the balloon thing involved using a couple small squares of Scotch tape where the need pierced the balloon. It should be small enough and ‘invisible’ enough not to see and it kept the balloon from doing the tear/split thing that is the start of the ‘pop’. The oil trick is kind of interesting, though, too.
