The New Design Is Up!

Posted By Ben Goulding, 7 September, 2009 | permalink

Okay guys, so if you follow me on twitter @pigjockey, you may (or may not) have noticed that I’ve been working on a new design for the site, and here it is!

It’s completely different from the previous look. It’s cleaner, faster-loading and with a bunch of new features.

Starting from the top, there’s still a search feature so you can browse entries from the archives, however this works through Google now. Moving down, on the sidebar, I’ve kept the RSS/Twitter/Facebook/email subscription links, so please feel free to check them out. Still on the sidebar, there are three little tabs for you to check out recent posts, browse by category or browse the archives by month.

A completely new feature I’ve added is the calendar. If you missed a day, you can click on the link to that individual date and you’ll be presented with all the posts from that day.

Then we come to recent comments. These recent comments are more detailed than the previous ones, so if you make a comment, you’ll be seeing your name and comment there. Just below the recent comments is a tag cloud, so you can browse by tags. The more popular the tag, the bigger it’s font.

You’ll probably have noticed the small “share” button below each post entry. If you hover over, or click it, you’ll see a list of options including email, print and various social media which you can use to share that post. I really appreciate you guys spreading the word whenever you can! Let’s let people know about Pig Jockey.

So that’s just about it. Hopefully you’ll check out all the new features and if you stumble across any errors or problems with the site, I’d be grateful if you could contact me.

Thanks guys.

50 Things That Are Being Killed By The Internet

Internet Revolution. Image: masternewmedia

The internet has been the revolution of our time, and it’s generally changed our lives for the better. I mean, we have an eternity of information at our fingertips, can communicate with others around the globe at the click of a button as well as being able to bank and shop from our homes, and that’s just the start. But the internet is not all good and it does have it’s downsides. Take a look at this really cool article entitled “50 Things That Are Being Killed By The Internet” from the “Telegraph”.

Here’s a brief extract:

1) The art of polite disagreement
While the inane spats of YouTube commencers may not be representative, the internet has certainly sharpened the tone of debate. The most raucous sections of the blogworld seem incapable of accepting sincerely held differences of opinion; all opponents must have “agendas”.

2) Fear that you are the only person unmoved by a celebrity’s death
Twitter has become a clearing-house for jokes about dead famous people. Tasteless, but an antidote to the “fans in mourning” mawkishness that otherwise predominates.

3) Listening to an album all the way through
The single is one of the unlikely beneficiaries of the internet – a development which can be looked at in two ways. There’s no longer any need to endure eight tracks of filler for a couple of decent tunes, but will “album albums” like Radiohead’s Amnesiac get the widespread hearing they deserve?

Serena and Nike Couldn’t Afford a Spellchecker?

Serena Spelling

It looks like Serena and her sponsor, Nike, didn’t bother with the spellcheck on this one.

Vicious, yes. Ambitious, yes! “Delicous”, what?!

NASA ‘Hijacks’ Berlin TV Tower

Posted By Ben Goulding, 7 September, 2009 | permalink

(Youtube Link)

One of the most recognizable buildings in Berlin is the Berlin TV tower. The 1,200ft tower that overlooks the city bears a striking resemblance to a rocket and in this video spoof, the Berlin TV tower is “stolen” by NASA.

Fabian Tischer, 28, who grew up just a few miles from the telecommunications tower, created this footage to realize his childhood fantasy.

“As a child, I used to think the TV tower in the centre of the former capital of East Germany was a rocket. And now, with my technical possibilities, I have transformed it into that”.

The very realistic video was produced using genuine NASA audio recordings, along with images of the tower and some pretty impressive animation skills.
