Microsoft Is Racist

Posted By Ben Goulding, 26 August, 2009 | permalink

Microsoft has apologized for pasting a white man’s head onto a black man’s body in a photograph for it’s official website.

Microsoft Poland

The original photo featured a white man, an asian and a black man who were attending a meeting, which was published on Microsoft’s main U.S. site. However, on a version aimed to appeal to Polish customers, the black man’s face was replaced with a white man’s.

Microsoft later apologized on it’s official Twitter feed.

“Marketing site photo mistake – sincere apologies – we’re in the process of taking down the image,” it tweeted.

An official spokesman added: “We are looking into the details of this situation.”

Star Trek Aftershaves

Star Trek Aftershaves

These Stark Trek aftershaves provide the must have scent for all Trek fans out there.

The three scents include one, Tiberius, that takes its branding from the middle name of James T Kirk, Red Shirt Cologne, which is inspired by the strong-but-stupid extras who tend to come a cropper on Stark Trek missions and Ponn Farr scent, that apparently takes its name from the Vulcan mating cycle, which is designed for women.

The perfumes are available at Firebox.com.

“Tiberius Cologne for men is difficult to define and impossible to refuse. In any universe,” the product website states.

“It combines citron, black pepper and cedar top notes with vanilla, white musk, and sandalwood base notes to create a “casual yet commanding” aroma, according to the creators Genki Wear.”

Is Wednesday The Worst Day Of The Week?

Posted By Ben Goulding, 26 August, 2009 | permalink

Mondays are given a bad rap, aren’t they? The first day of the working week and nobody wants to get out of bed. Well, in fact, new research has found that Monday my not be the worst day of the week- Wednesday is!

Worst Day Of My Life

New research by two American applied mathematicians suggests that Wednesday is the most miserable day of the week.

“Professors Christopher Danforth and Peter Dodds, of Vermont University, analysed words used in 2.4 million internet blogs such as Twitter, giving a score out of nine depending on how positive they were.

Words like free, fun, rainbow and sex all scored above eight, while words such as betray, cruel, hatred and suffocate all scored less than two.

Saturday and Sunday rated predictably well but, perhaps surprisingly, Monday came out as the second happiest day of the week, partly because people were still reminiscing about the weekend. However by Wednesday, these feelings had subsided.”

Is Monday really the second best day of the week? What’s your worst day of the week, and why?

1,000 cameras ’solve one crime’

Posted By Ben Goulding, 25 August, 2009 | permalink

CCTVMany Britons worry that Britain is become a surveillance society, and with one CCTV camera per 14 people, they may have a point. However, opposition argue that they are there to protect society. Well, CCTV cameras may not be as useful as thought for aiding the fight against crime – it has been found that only one crime was solved by each 1,000 CCTV cameras in London last year.

“The internal police report found the million-plus cameras in London rarely help catch criminals.

In one month CCTV helped capture just eight out of 269 suspected robbers.”

Do we need so many CCTV cameras? Are they serving a valid purpose, or are they just creating an unwarranted surveillance society?

Cockney Cash Machine

Cockney ATM

Bank Machine, an ATM provider from England, will be using cockney rhyming slang on five of their ATM screens in East London for the next three months, to try to amuse customers.

“Readin’ your bladder of lard”, read the message on the screen. It asked for his “Huckleberry Finn”. Then more bewildering questions: did he wanted to see his balance on the Charlie Sheen? Did he wish to change his Huckleberry Finn or did he simply require sausage and mash, with or without a receipt?”

Roy Parker, 62, a bona fide Cockney, who works behind the counter of a mini-cab firm next to one of the cockney ATMs noticed a major flaw in the idea however.

“Real Cockneys don’t have bank accounts or all that palava,” he said. “They put it under the mattress.”

Wine Bottles

“Publisher Kraken Opus — whose slogan is “The most luxurious series of publications ever created” — has announced that they’ll be publishing a book on wine that will retail for an astounding $1 million.

The book, weighing 66 pounds, will highlight the top 100 wineries in the world and come with six bottles from each winery, presumably driving up the astronomical price tag. But is it worth it?”

I’ll let you decide that one.

A Heart Attack On A Plate – KFC’s Double Down Sandwich

Posted By Ben Goulding, 24 August, 2009 | permalink

Nowadays, many fast food restaurants are trying to make their food healthier, whilst KFC has gone in the totally opposite direction. KFC’s new sadwich, the ‘Double Down Sandwich’, really is a heart attack on a plate.

KFC's Double Down Sandwich

The sandwich contains:

• 2 Original Recipe Filets
• Bacon
• Pepper Jack Cheese
• Swiss Cheese
• Colonel’s Sauce

That’s right – a sandwich with no bread. Instead, it uses “original chicken”. And that original chicken is made from:

Fresh Chicken Marinated with: Salt, Sodium Phosphate, and Monosodium Glutamate.
Seasoned with: Maltodextrin, Salt, Bleached Wheat Flour, Partially Hydrogenated Soybean and Cottonseed Oil, Monosodium Glutamate, Secret Kentucky Grilled Chicken Spices, Palm Oil, Natural Flavor, Garlic Powder, Soy Sauce (Soybean, Wheat, Salt), Chicken Fat, Chicken Broth, Autolyzed Yeast, Beef Powder, Rendered Beef Fat, Extractives of Turmeric, Dehydrated Carrot, Onion Powder, and Not More Than 2% Each of Calcium Silicate and Silicon Dioxide Added as Anticaking Agents.

Contains Wheat and Soy.

Have you had one of these? For the amount of junk in it, it had better be the best tasting sandwich ever!

Visualizing The Big Bang

Posted By Ben Goulding, 24 August, 2009 | permalink

(Youtube Link)

We made this video about the Big Bang because the theory is important and amazing, but often misunderstood.

This video was produced without any funding from any outside sources. It was put together with donated creative time from a group with a desire to further public cognition of science.

Science has many amazing stories to tell, this is the first. The Big Bang Briefly.

Now I’m no physics or astronomy expert, but did she just say that something came from nothing? That’s totally illogical isn’t it? Are these the same people who don’t believe that God exists, because it’s impossible for something to be created from nothing? Discuss.

“I wanted to create an ultimate wooden architecture. I thought through this bungalow, which can be considered as a small and primitive house, it was possible to do a primitive and simultaneously new architecture. 350mm square profile cedar is piled endlessly.”

A work of art or a pile of firewood? You decide.

Zip Code Puzzles

When we buy a jigsaw, the shop we are buying from gives us a select few jigsaws to choose from. It never the other way round and perhaps this is the reason why jigsaws don’t have great public appeal.

Well one jigsaw manufacturer may just change that public perception – introducing Zip Code Puzzles!

“Zip Code Puzzles are totally unique, map-style jigsaws centered on a place of your choice. Simply send us the house number, street name and zip code of the area you’d like at the center of your puzzle – be it your own humble abode or a friend or relative’s pad – and leave the rest to us. Before you can say 90210 we’ll send you an amazingly absorbing, personalized puzzle featuring your chosen area.”
