Dogs As Clever As Two-Year-Olds

Samson - Britain's most talented dog

New research by animal psychologists suggests that dogs are as clever as the average two-year-old child.

They have found that dogs are capable of understanding up to 250 words and gestures, can count up to five and can perform simple mathematical calculations.

“The average dog is about as bright linguistically as a human two-year-old,” said Professor Stanley Coren, a leading expert on canine intelligence at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver who has carried out the work.

“This means they can understand about 165 words, signs and signals. Those in the top 20 per cent were able to understand as many as 250 words and signals, which is about the same as a two and a half year old.

“Obviously we are not going to be able to sit down and have a conversation with a dog, but like a two-year-old, they show that they can understand words and gestures.”

The research also found that Border collies were rated as the most intelligent while Afghan hounds were the least intelligent.

I guess it’s difficult to have a specific criteria to measure intelligence, especially when dog and human needs are very different, however what the research has found is most impressive.

Hey, I’m experimenting with linkbacks on specific posts at the moment. I don’t want related posts to be too general, but I’ll test it out in the future and see how it trends. You’re post on relates posts was neat though.

Great post, I voted for yes! I have always had border collies, who are exceptionally intelligent, and i agree dogs probably do have similar intellectual capacities to a 2 year old child. I work with exchange and mart where there are lots of dogs and pet supplies http://www.exchangeandmart.co.uk/ if you are thinking of treating your dog soon
